This is part three of the three sessions on how to identify the Washington-Franklin issues. This HANDS-ON WORKSHOP will be a 45 minute introductory session on how to identify the Washington-Franklin issues. It is not mandatory to attend this session in order to attend the next sessions, but it is recommended. This WORKSHOP will first review the differences between flat plate issues, rotary press issues and offset issues, as distinguishing between a flat plate stamp, a rotary press stamp and an offset stamp is indispensable in identifying the different Washington-Franklin issues. The first hands-on experiment will be to identify 10 different Washington stamps as to whether the stamp is a rotary press issue, a flat plate issue or an offset issue – the answer is marked on the back of each stamp for you to check your answer. The next hands-on experiment will be to identify 10 Washington stamps by catalog number, having determined the stamp to be a flat plate or a rotary plate or an offset, as well as its perforation – the answer is marked on the back of each stamp for you to check your answer. Both of these experiments are recommended, at least as a review, in order to be able to identify your Washington-Franklin issues by catalog number in the next session. Please bring your tongs (no tweezers, please), a perforation gauge, watermark fluid and tray, a (lighted) magnifier and a Specialized Scott Catalog (a few are available in the Library) to this session.
