Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 532 - 09/03/2024

The monthly board meeting will be this Saturday.
It's a new month and a new schedule. There have been changes. Please inform me of any errors or changes in a timely matter in order for them to be included.
The 1st Tuesday Stamp club has changed its meeting location. It will now meet at the Zumbro Lutheran Church, 624 3rd Ave. SW Rochester. All members should have received a notice.
The Twin City Philatelic Society has cancelled its meeting on Tuesday, September 3rd. This is a one-time cancellation, and all other meetings will resume on their regular schedule.
The Second Sunday Stamp Show is actually on the third Saturday this month, (21st). This will be the same day as the library bourse and be sure to check back for any changes or updates.
We have what should be a fascinating program this month on the Japanese Internment Camps of World War Two. This will be presented by Bob Akaki. I have had the pleasure of meeting Bob a couple times when he has been up in Minnesota for the Minnesota Stamp EXPO. He lives in Nebraska and is graciously coming to give his presentation on the internment camps. Bob not only has a vast collection of the material to show us, but he has also written many articles on the subject. He has done a lot of research on the subject and has family history tied to the internment camps. This is not a presentation to miss.
The State Fair is over for this year. I know a few of you exhibited and received awards. Congratulations!
I have heard a rumor that the USPS is considering reopening a branch office during the fair. The fairgrounds had an operating branch office during the fair from 1901 through 2012. UPS took over the space, but it now sits vacant. Collecting the different cancels at the fair throughout the years was a pursuit by many collectors.
My cover this week has a full ad back for the Minneapolis Industrial Exposition. At the bottom of the ad are three lines promoting the State Fair. The bottom line reads, "One trip to Minneapolis will enable you to see both the Exposition and Fair". 1886 was the second year for the fair at its present location. The Minnesota State Fair was first held in territorial times, (1854). Ironically it was not held the first year of statehood due to lack of funds. For the first thirty years the fair moved about the state. It was held in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Fort Snelling, Red Wing, Rochester, Winona and Owatonna. When it opened in its present location it was in an area known as the Hamline District. Hamline had a post office from 1880 to 1891. The present site was previously the Minnesota Poor Farm. The fairgrounds are actually outside of the St. Paul city limits, and it is actually in Falcon Heights.
