| We have a great presentation coming up this Saturday, February 24. Kathy Johnson will have a hands-on presentation on how to prepare an exhibit. Kathy has years of experience as an exhibitor and as a philatelic judge. If you have ever exhibited or just thought that you would like to, this program will help you prepare your exhibit and you will have a better understanding of what a judge looks for in a winning exhibit. |

The renovation of the basement at the library is nearing completion. This will include a few new areas such as a meeting room, a bindery area, a room designated for stamp identification and a large area for periodicals. The next step will be help in building shelves and moving stuff around. Stay tuned for updates. |

At the bourse on the weekend, we discussed utilizing our new upcoming spaces. One of the ideas was to have clinics/workshops. We don't want to interfere with the programs on Saturdays. We discussed having the clinics on Wednesday's between 10:00 and noon. Wednesday was the day for the Stamp Academy, but that is really not happening anymore. Jerry and I are already at the library on Wednesdays. We would be happy to kick it off and between the two of us we could come up with the first few presentations. We need input from our members. First consideration is would a daytime time slot on a weekday work for our members? We have had several members reluctant to come to the library in the evenings. Secondly, we need to know how often to have a workshop. We were talking about monthly, but now is the time to discuss all options. Please share your opinion on this, good, bad or ugly, we want all input in order to make a decision that will work for the majority of us. Send your ideas to me at pjflaherty58@gmail . "Philately Meets Portraiture" by John Kaul - Groveland Gallery Across the street from the Walker Art Institute in Minneapolis, there is a Victorian mansion called Groveland Gallery. They sell fine art. They currently have an exhibition through March 2 of Postal Art Covers by a local gentleman named John Kaul. On 6"X9" envelopes, he paints portraits of people with a quotation and attaches various postage stamps relevant to the person or the quotation. His art actually hasn't gone through the mail, (although it could with the proper amount of current US postage.) It's a fascinating exhibit and should not be missed if you like fine art and stamps. Note: They are closed Sundays and Mondays. |

Sometimes while attending a stamp show, I find myself not finding anything special to add to my major collecting area (Iceland), so instead I end up checking the cover boxes for something interesting that catches my eye. Of course, they catch my eye for a variety of reasons--a particular cachet, postmark, person's name, etc. The covers highlighted here caught my eye at the recent Sarasota Stamp Expo. |

The first is a plain pre-stamped envelope from 1957. Nothing unusual about that. |

Having grown up in Minnesota and spent most of my life living there and oh, by the way, worked a part-time job for the Minnesota Twins for 14 years--I had never heard of Ball Club, Minn. So of course, my curiosity had to find out where was "Ball Club, Minn". |

|
Ball Club, Minn. is an unincorporated community located within the Leech Lake Indian Reservation on the border between Itasca and Cass counties. The Mississippi River surrounds the community on both the east and west side. The town received its name from a type of Native American lacrosse stick. (Modern day lacrosse descends and resembles games played by various Native American communities.) |

Population of Ball Club, MN in 2020 was 354. The community consists of two churches, a community center, a clinic, a water tower, a Head Start office and a Cordell. |

|
