This last Saturday was the collector's bourse. We had seven in attendance. I had called Paul prior to the bourse and asked him to help in identifying some Heligoland stamps I had. He brought a fantastic collection to view and some reference material that I was unaware of. We determined that all of mine were reprints. I expected that. What I did not expect was is that we found out which printing each of them were from and how many were made of each reprinting and the years they were done. All of these reprints were done within just a couple years of the original printings. We then went to the lab with Mark and looked through Paul's collection and discovered a few new finds there. The bourse was very good with trades and sales happening. The lesson on an area that I knew almost nothing about was off the charts. Our library is a great resource with more than just books. The knowledge and tools available at the library are something that is of value that can't be measured in my opinion. If you are researching a certain area, please reach out to us. I bet we have a member that can help along with the tools and reference materials. |

I have collected early used postal cards since I was a kid. I'm not exactly sure why. Most of them are very plain and very utilitarian looking. Some of them get unique cancels that are not common on covers as they often were canceled with different equipment. There has been one that eluded me all these years. It is the UX7a. It is a variety of the UX7 card that has 23 "teeth" under the "One Cent" instead of the normal 22 teeth. It is not rare, but it does catalog for $65.00 whereas the much more common variety catalogs for forty cents. I have bid on it many times over the years and have always been outbid, and it sometimes goes for over the catalog price which means I have not been the only one searching for this. The seller had two for sale. One was at a fixed price and the other was an auction. He wanted too much for the fixed price one, but I got the auction one. He contacted me a couple weeks later and offered me the one he had at the fixed price for the price I bid on the one that I had already received. I accepted, so soon I will have two. The hunt has always been one of the best part of this hobby for me. The very best parts are the socializing and learning experiences with my friends connected to this hobby of ours. |
