| For this week's cover I have a story. At last month's meeting for the Twin City Philatelic Society Brian asked me if I had the winning bid on the Minnesota Territorial cover from the Golden Valley auction that closed the night before. He knew I had a hard time resisting territorial covers. I told him I think I bid on 15 lots, and I only won a single lot. That's what happens when you are a bottom feeder and tend to bid minimum or low bids. I needed to check my invoice and see what lot number 1432 was. My one lot was the territorial cover From St. Paul Min T cancelled on November 11, 1855. At first glance this was not an exceptional cover. The strike was weak, especially the Min T portion. It did have a year date which is harder to find from this era, but it was hard to read the last digit. Upon closer inspection I saw that it went to Fountain Grove, Mn in Rice County. I have collected Minnesota covers for many years and did not recall a place by the name of Fountain Grove. A little digging and I found it was a six-month post office that only existed in territorial times. It opened on September 6,1855 and its service was discontinued by March 31, 1856. Service since April 1, 1856 for that area has been handled by the Northfield post office. Obviously, I would prefer to have it sent from Fountain Grove with a great postmark. I dug a little deeper and found that there are no known covers from Fountain Grove. The stamp is #11 and it was noted on the back that it sold at one point for $9.00. |
