Toozeday Nooze

Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 624 - 06/09/2026

This Saturday will be a workday at the library.
Today's cover is one of Jerry's covers. I am always happy to show other people's stuff. My only requirement is that you provide the research and copy for it, which Jerry has done. Jerry notes that this is a scarcity 7 cover. When Richard Helbock came up with the scarcity index over 40 years ago, he had the help of 100's of people throughout the country. The scarcity index ranges from 0 to 9 with 0 representing operating post offices. Scarcity seven through nine are considered rare. I had a few telephone conversations with Richard when he was still with us, he told me that scarcity seven is where there is at least one cover known to exist. Scarcity eight and nine may not exist and there are many factors that go into determining their rarity such as length of time the post office operated, size of the town, businesses in the town, etc. I personally do not have many covers with a scarcity index over seven and only a few of them are from Minnesota cities. I have copied Jerry's text exactly as he sent it.
Coburg, Lyon County, Minn., Dec 1875 manuscript town 1873-77; rare DPO (Helbock rarity 7 of 8) on Cover to Winona.
Today, it is considered a ghost town or a discontinued settlement, with its name rarely appearing outside of philatelic records and antique auction listings.
Coburg was the original name of a post office and early settlement located in Amiret Township in Lyon County, Minnesota.
  • History: Established in July 1872, the post office was named after William Coburn (sometimes spelled Coburg), a pioneer merchant and the first postmaster.
  • Name Change: Due to confusion between the "Saratoga" railway siding and the "Coburg" post office, the site was officially renamed Amiret in 1879, honoring Amiretta Sykes, wife of a railroad official.
  • Current Status: Today, this area is known as the unincorporated community of Amiret.
  • The town was largely agricultural and was developed around the Chicago and Northwestern Railway.
Thank You, Jerry, for providing us this rare Minnesota cover this week.
To sign up for the Toozeday Nooze go to our website at NORPS.org, there you will find a link for the Toozeday Nooze and on the event page where you can sign up to receive the Nooze every week and keep up on events and programs at the library as well as happenings with the local stamp clubs and shows. I have been told this does not work with some phones but should be accessible from your computer. You do not need to be a member of the library to receive this, but I encourage you to do so. We are run and organized 100% by volunteers and your donations keep the doors open and the lights on.
