Toozeday Nooze

Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 627 - 06/30/2026

The library will be closed this Saturday in observance of the 4th of July holiday. The board meeting that is normally on the first Saturday of the month will be held at Minnesota Stamp EXPO on July 18th. It will be followed by a presentation by Dr. Gene Young on the 250th anniversary of our nation's Declaration of Independence titled "About Two Dozen Pieces of American Philately That Celebrate What Makes America Uniquely America."
I know in the past some of the clubs do not have a regular meeting in July and they choose to meet at Minnesota Stamp EXPO instead. I have not heard from all of the clubs, so I have listed their regular dates. Please check with your club if you unsure of this and I will update this if I receive notice of changes.
I have four covers this week following the history of a once vibrant and important steamboat stop that is currently a Minnesota ghost town. The town of Lake Saint Croix in the Wisconsin Territory became Point Douglass after the Minnesota Territory was formed. The post office opened on January 22, 1850. In addition to being a steamboat stop there was a train station there that connected with St. Paul and Chicago. My first cover is from Helena, Wisconsin to Point Douglass prior to Minnesota statehood. Sometime in 1866 the name was changed to Point Douglas. The second cover is from that time period. The cover has an interesting oval cancel with the county name included. In 1903 that post office closed and the mail for the area was handled by Langdon, Minnesota. The Langdon post office closed on October 31, 1933. The post card shown is from there. Since the closing of the Langdon Post Office the mail for the area has been handled by the Saint Paul Park Post Office which is still in operation and is the final cover shown. While Point Douglas is listed as a ghost town there are still remnants of a couple buildings. The area is in Denmark township which is close to Hastings and across the river from Prescott, Wisconsin.

To sign up for the Toozeday Nooze go to our website at NORPS.org, there you will find a link for the Toozeday Nooze and on the event page where you can sign up to receive the Nooze every week and keep up on events and programs at the library as well as happenings with the local stamp clubs and shows. I have been told this does not work with some phones but should be accessible from your computer. You do not need to be a member of the library to receive this, but I encourage you to do so. We are run and organized 100% by volunteers and your donations keep the doors open and the lights on.

Upcoming Events:

Date and Time At EXPO- June 18, 2026 at 11:00AM
Event Upcoming Library Programs Here is Gene's description of the program. It will be themed around the 250 year celebration and will be an examination of a few dozen US stamps that commemorate what I consider to be some very important events/developments in American history that have stamps issued for them. I am basing the talk on a neat, short book we have in the library that highlights twenty British stamps that are important commemorations of events in British history. My talk will highlight about twenty pieces of Americana, for which we have stamps, that celebrate important American occurrences that are often overlooked but which I consider really important items in American technological/cultural/political history. Items like the Louisiana Purchase, the Harlem Renaissance and the invention of the telegraph. No Revolutionary War/Civil War, WW Two -- these events get all the attention, as do Washington and Lincoln. I am calling the talk "About Two Dozen Pieces of American Philately That Celebrate What Makes America Uniquely America."
