My cover this week is a registered cover with the stamps Scott #'s 147 & 152. It was sent to Mr. H.B. Shaw. As a cover collector I see several covers with the same addressee over time. In the 19th century I see a lot of covers to E. C. White in Winona. They were a grocery wholesaler. In the 20th century I see a lot addressed to St. Paul Book and Stationery. These are a couple examples where someone saved a hoard of covers. From 1865 to 1881 there are registered covers that pop up addressed to H. B. Shaw. Often time they are addressed to Mr. Shaw. H.B. Shaw was Harriet Butler Shaw. She went by H. B. to mask her gender as she likely would not have succeeded had the public known she was a woman. Miss Shaw was a pioneer in the mail order business and was said to inspire the Montgomery Wards mail order business. A lot of what she sold was what is now referred to as snake oil and the postal inspectors eventually shut her down for fraud in 1881. In the 1920's a stamp dealer/collector by the name of Sterling T. Dow purchased her hoard of over 150,000 covers from her mail order business. Many of them were registered covers. It was reported that over one thousand had fifteen cent stamps of seven different varieties during her time in business. Some of these are very valuable today. It is estimated that close to ten percent of Scott number 118 & 119 on cover in existence today came from this hoard. In the 1920's the demand for stamps was much greater than that for covers and most of the covers were destroyed for the stamps. After Mr. Dow had more than enough inventory of stamps, he stopped tearing them off the covers and those covers are what survive today. If you have covers with higher denomination stamps from 1865 to 1881 there is a chance, that they are to H.B. Shaw. I have found a few myself and occasionally see them for sale. Harriet lived in the same house at 15 South Street in Alfred, Maine her entire life. She died in 1933 at the age of 91. |
