Toozeday Nooze

Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 521 - 06/18/2024

This Saturday the library will have a program titled "Philately of the Dead Countries of the Russian Civil War" by Peter Weisensel. If you have ever attended a program by Peter, you already know that his presentations are fantastic. If you have not, make a point to attend this one. I guarantee you will be entertained, and you will learn something. I'm sure he will have many examples and it will be a great history lesson. I attended a program of Peter's a few years ago on a subject I thought I knew a lot about. I quickly found out I wasn't the expert I thought I was, and Peter has since helped me expand that collection.
The celebration of life for Al Sarvi was this past Saturday. It was great to see so many of his stamp collecting friend in attendance. I got to meet a lot of is family. Jerry gave a "Broken Tongs" ceremony. This is something he adapted from a ceremony he learned as a magician. Many people got up and told stories about Al. There were lots of laughs and great memories shared.
You have about one week left to let me know about schedule changes for July. I know in the past several clubs have held their meetings at EXPO instead of their regular meeting times and locations. So far, I have heard from the GPS. Please do not assume that I know of your changes, even if I am a member of your club. There is a lot going on in July, and if I do not receive your notices, it is very likely that they will not make it into the schedule. All four weeks of the Nooze are probably going to be prepared next weekend and scheduled for posting on their respective dates. Without hearing from the clubs, I will make assumptions and I will make mistakes. When you contact me after the Nooze goes out I will tell you that I begged for changes for three weeks and late changes will likely not make it into the Nooze. Please don't tell me in person. Send an email. I print all emails that I receive for the Nooze and review them as I do the Nooze. I probably won't remember what you told me at a club meeting. You may send your changes to me at pjflaherty58@gmail.com
My cover this week is one that I am hoping someone out there can tell me more about. It is a censored cover sent during World War Two that was marked, "RETURN TO SENDER, NO SERVICE AVAILABLE". This is not uncommon between waring nations during the war. This however was sent from Pennsylvania to Switzerland. I always believed Switzerland remained "Neutral" during the war. I'm sure they were cautious and likely prepared for war, but I was taught they were one of the few counties that remained neutral throughout. I am not questioning the censorship as that happened even between Allies. The refusal of service is what puzzles me. Someone out there knows, and I will post what they share in an update. The enclosure is a Christmas card.
If you have anything that you want shared let me know at pjflaherty58@gmail.com
Library Corner:
Hi Everyone,
It is Tim again. It has been a busy week here at the Stamp Library. This Saturday several of us went to the Memorial for Al Sarvi at the Nonna Rosa's Italian restaurant in Robbinsdale. Al's family put the event on and graciously invited his stamp friends to join in. Al has a very loving family. It was an honor to be a part of the event. Jerry Kolton from the Maplewood Stamp Club and the Northern Philatelic Library performed the broken tongs ceremony to signify the end of Al's collecting life. We will all miss Al. Jerry did a fine job.
Priory to Saturday, we had some quite busy times organizing furniture and the auction catalog collection downstairs. Below is a picture of Brian Wilson organizing catalogs. It just goes to show that we do more than just have coffee and donuts on Thursdays. Although, it does depend on which Thursday you pick. 🙂
This coming Saturday I'm very much looking forward to the presentation by Peter Weisensel on "Philately of the Dead Countries of the Russian Civil War". Hope to see some of you there.
Just a reminder that we will be having the Annual General Meeting of the Northern Philatelic Library at Expo on July 20th at 11:00am. Please put that meeting on your calendar.
Best regards ... Tim
