Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 572 - 06/10/2025

This Saturday is a work day at the library.
The Maplewood Stamp Club will be meeting at a different location this month. It will meet at The Roseville Baptist Church, 211 County Road B2 West, Roseville, MN 55113. They will return to their regular meeting location in July.
I hope to post what this month's program at the library this month soon.
My cover this week is a Special Delivery cover sent from Ketchikan, Alaska on March 21, 1904, to Saratoga, California where it was received on March 28, 1904. The sender was George Buckingham Waterhouse. The recipient was his wife Leof Mills Waterhouse. Mr. Waterhouse died at the age of 66 in 1924. Mrs. Waterhouse died at the age of 55 in 1910. The return address is the J.R. Heckman & Company. Mr. Heckman came to Ketchikan in 1886 when the population was around 40 people. He bought prime real estate in Ketchikan and at the time this letter was sent he had three stores in Ketchikan. The prime industry in the town was fishing and canning. The person I got this cover from speculated that Mr. Waterhouse was an employee of Mr. Heckman. I could not find any information to confirm this. Mr. Waterhouse invented the floating fish trap for catching Salmon which revolutionized the Salmon fishing industry. Ketchikan became "The Salmon Capital of the World", and by the 1920's there were over a dozen canneries in Ketchikan. By 1930 Ketchikan was the largest city in Alaska. In the first 24 days of use of his newly invented floating trap over 400,000 fish were netted. The traps were so efficient that by the 1940's there was a large decline in the salmon runs. In 1959 the state of Alaska banned their use.
Ketchikan is one of my favorite towns to visit in Alaska. The wood framed buildings that housed Mr. Heckman's stores were replaced with concrete buildings in the 1920's that remain today much as they did back then. I shopped the Tongass Trading store just a few years ago. It is easy to imagine what it was like in Ketchikan 100 years ago when you visit, although tourism seems to be the main business these days. I was there when the Salmon were running up the river. There were so many it looked like you could cross the river walking on the backs of the fish.
