Toozeday Nooze

Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 577 - 07/15/2025

Minnesota Stamp EXPO is this weekend July 18th through the 20th. This is an official APS World Series of Philately show complete with exhibits, programs and an auction and lots more to enjoy. This is a Three-Day Show, Friday through Sunday.
The library's annual meeting will be held on Saturday at the EXPO at 11:00 AM.
The Twin City Philatelic Society's second meeting will be held Thursday the 17th assisting setting up EXPO.
If you are not sure if your club's schedule has been changed due to the show, please check with your club.
It takes a lot of volunteers to help the Minnesota Stamp Dealers Association pull off a three-day show, and it brings in dealers from all over the country. This is your chance to see and purchase new material.
I hope to post what this month's program at the library will be soon.
This week's cover is from Clearwater, Minnesota Territory. It has a manuscript cancel. According to Floyd Risvold's book, "The Minnesota Territory in Postmarks, Letters and History", there are less than five known to exist. I believe there are likely more as I have two and the one in his book is different. Floyd's book was written 40 years ago and since the internet I would bet others have been discovered.
I received a lot of positive comments from last week's Nooze and I would like to thank those of you that sent those comments. Others were interested in what mistakes I made in collecting covers. Basically, I made the same mistake that I make with anything I collect. I bought too much junk. I needed to learn how to focus on the items that interest me the most. There are no rules to collecting anything, but a collection can become a hoard without focus. I can tell you that when I started collecting covers, I liked big balloon cancels and passed on a lot of manuscript cancels. Manuscript cancels are earlier and scarcer than the big balloon cancels that I went for. Fortunately, I learned from this mistake fairly early in my collecting. A lot of the more common covers that I bought when I started collecting became much more affordable when online auctions started. If I could go back in time I would look for more of the scarcer items that have appreciated in value and avoid the junk that I bought in mass quantities. I had no problem spending $40.00 for a large box of junk, but I had a tough time justifying more than $20.00 for any one item. One man's junk is another man's treasure, and I have the treasure for that one man. I just need to find him. Fortunately, along the way I learned to pick up some better stuff.
To sign up for the Toozday Nooze go to our website at NORPS.org, there you will find a link for the Toozday Nooze and on the event page where you can sign up to receive the Nooze every week and keep up on events and programs at the library as well as happenings with the local stamp clubs and shows. I have been told this does not work with some phones but should be accessible from your computer. You do not need to be a member of the library to receive this, but I encourage you to do so. We are run and organized 100% by volunteers and your donations keep the doors open and the lights on.
If you have anything that you want shared let me know at pjflaherty58@gmail.com
