Toozeday Nooze

Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 602 - 01/06/2026

This Saturday will be a workday at the library.
I hope to post this month's program at the library soon.
I had a couple of errors in last week's Nooze. I had the wrong date for the Golden Valley Auction, and I had the wrong location for the GPS meeting. Both have been corrected.
I have one final Christmas item for this season that I meant to post prior to Christmas, but I had left it at my office. The card is one supplied by the Knights of Columbus for U.S. soldiers to write home for Christmas during World War One. This soldier was writing home to his sister from, "Somewhere in France" as the card states. He was part of the American Expeditionary Forces and he sent this a month after the Armistice of Compiegne. He was looking forward to heading home soon and was hoping to beat this card home. It was censored and signed by the censor on both the front and the back of the card. The Armistice effectively ended the fighting with the Germans on November 11, 1918, and the release of English POW's started almost immediately. The Treaty of Versailles was not signed until June 28,1919 and did not go into effect until January 10, 1920. The release of non-English POW's was not as swift and stretched out until 1920 for many of the German POWs. If you were held in a Russian Camp that stretched out until 1924 for some due to other conflicts in Russia at the time. I enjoyed reading a positive wartime cover for a change. This was less than a dollar and it's hard for me to understand how someone can give up a piece of family history like this, but then again, my own mother threw away all the letters my dad had written home during World War Two. Fortunately, my grandma saved the ones he wrote to her, and they are now treasured family heirlooms. I'm sure this card passed through many collectors' hands over the last 100 years with only a small few taking the time to read it. My advice is to read the mail contained in your covers. Many of them share a fascinating story and some may have historical significance.
To sign up for the Toozeday Nooze go to our website at NORPS.org, there you will find a link for the Toozeday Nooze and on the event page where you can sign up to receive the Nooze every week and keep up on events and programs at the library as well as happenings with the local stamp clubs and shows. I have been told this does not work with some phones but should be accessible from your computer. You do not need to be a member of the library to receive this, but I encourage you to do so. We are run and organized 100% by volunteers and your donations keep the doors open and the lights on.
If you have anything that you want shared let me know at pjflaherty58@gmail.com
