Toozeday Nooze

Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 604 - 01/20/2026

We will have a fascinating program on Zeppelin Covers by Mr. Bruce Johnson this Saturday at the library. I have not seen this collection, but I have heard about it. This is a program you will not want to miss. Bruce is a long-time collector of this material, and he has been a stamp dealer for many years.
To go with this weekend's presentation, we have an example of #C15. The C15 was designated for European-Pan-America round trip flights on the Graf Zeppelin. It was $2.60 at a time when standard airmail rates were five cents, but five cents only brought airmail service over land. The trip overseas was by ship until 1934 for crossings over the Pacific Ocean and a year later for crossings over the Atlantic. There were two other Graf Zeppelin issues. The C13 was 65 cents and intended for one-way crossings of the Atlantic Ocean. You will see this commonly on postcards. The C14 was in the amount of $1.30 and it was intended for trips between continents. The three stamps were first sold at post offices on April 19, 1930, and more than one million of each stamp were printed. The sales were very disappointing and on June 30th the unsold inventory was recalled and more than 90% of the stamps were destroyed. I believe this was the first and only time the post office recalled stamps and destroyed them. Of the millions printed it is believed that a little more than 225,000 total of all three were sold. I would bet most of those have survived.
To sign up for the Toozeday Nooze go to our website at NORPS.org, there you will find a link for the Toozeday Nooze and on the event page where you can sign up to receive the Nooze every week and keep up on events and programs at the library as well as happenings with the local stamp clubs and shows. I have been told this does not work with some phones but should be accessible from your computer. You do not need to be a member of the library to receive this, but I encourage you to do so. We are run and organized 100% by volunteers and your donations keep the doors open and the lights on.
