EDITION 647 - 11/03/2026
This Saturday we will have the monthly board meeting at the library.
I hope to post the program at the library for this month soon. We are still looking for presenters.
The Maplewood Stamp Club meets on the third Thursday this month.
This week's cover is an ad cover from a Minneapolis business that offered storage, rentals and repairs for automobiles in 1905. It made me wonder just how many cars there were in Minnesota in 1905. The best guess I found was 78,800 vehicles in Minnesota in 1905. Exact numbers are not known as Minnesota did not start licensing until 1908. I was also surprised to find that many of the cars in 1905 were foreign makes. The big U.S manufacturers were Oldsmobile, Cadillac and Ford. There were also many electric and steam powered vehicles at the time. Just a few years earlier in 1902 there were a whole lot less vehicles of any type in Minnesota. Car ownership started to really grow between 1904 and 1906. In 1905 the population of Minnesota was 1,973,884 which relates to one vehicle for every 25 people or less than one vehicle in every five households. The roads in 1905 were designed for horse and buggy and the cars shared these roads. I could not find a record of how many businesses offered car repair. You had to be pretty handy back then and be able to do many repairs yourself. For comparison the population in 2026 is 5,863,405 and there are 5,417,761 registered vehicles.
The business that this was sent to was Minnie Harvester which was incorporated in St. Paul in 1902. They made equipment for smaller farms. Some of the items made were binders harvesters, mowers and binder twine from grass. The company was acquired by International Harvester in 1910, and they continued to make twine for decades in the St. Paul plant.
