The Minnesota Postal History Society does not meet in February.
My cover this week was identified as U.S. #10A by the previous owner, but it may be an 11A. I need to compare the color to a known 10A to be certain. It also has local stamp Bloods Despatch #15L13. The cover has both a large blue Philadelphia balloon cancel and the Blood's Despatch cancel. The local stamp appears to be canceled with a drop of acid which was common practice on these. The process discolored the stamp. The cover was mailed on January 8, 1853. It went to West Haverford, Pennsylvania. The post office in West Haverford was in Delaware County and existed from 1837 up to 1871. An interesting two-page letter is enclosed.

Hi Everyone,
In this Library Corner I'm going to do something different. I want to share with you a series of books by Richard Helbock about the United States Post Offices. One of my many collecting interests is to try to collect a cover for each Post Office that has ever existed in Minnesota. To this end I have found "Volume III - The Upper Midwest" to be very helpful.

If you look down this list you will see "Horton", which is in the County of "Olmsted, MN". The dates that it was open were 1892-1905, and it has a scarcity index of 5. The scarcity index ranges from 0, which means that the Post Office is still in operation so you can go and obtain an example of a cancellation at any time, through to 9 which means that there might be only just a few known examples in existence. I have used the information in this book to create a lookup tool for me (and anyone else) to use to get the information about a Minnesota Post Office. Have a look at https://mncancels.org.
