EDITION 540 - 10/29/2024 |
This Saturday we will have the monthly board meeting. |
On Saturday we had our open house to show all that our library offers. We had great attendance with a lot of familiar faces and a few new ones. A potluck lunch was held with plenty to eat and lots of treats. The cake was especially good, and it had the library logo on it. I hope you got a glimpse of it early as the cake did not last long. The open house included the unveiling of our basement which houses periodicals, auction catalogs, a lounge area and the new stamp lab. Mark Stockburger gave a demonstration of the equipment in the lab. It is a stamp collectors utopia for those that want to identify varieties or flyspeck. There is a large worktable with both short and long wave lighting at the flick of a switch. Mark had examples of tagging, secret marks, paper types, etc. which are only visible under this lighting. He even showed a U.S. stamp with a luminescent ink that was previously unidentified. (He is working on getting that recognized.) We also have two microscopes where he had examples to help determine forgeries that would be difficult to identify under standard magnification methods. I had never used a microscope to help in identification of a stamp before. I found it very useful in identifying paper types. There are two electronic watermark detectors for you to use. In addition to the more sophisticated equipment that many of us don't otherwise have available there are all the regular tools used in stamp identification such as perf gauges, watermark detecting trays, color charts etc. I have collected stamps for 60 years and I learned a few things in the stamp lab. This is a very unique resource for all of us to have available to us. If you visit the library for no other reason than to utilize the stamp lab you will leave happy, and don't forget we still have 1000's of books to help in your research on just about any area of philately you can come up with. |
We will continue to grow to better serve our stamp collecting community. We are planning to add a bindery area in the near future. If you have never visited the library, please come see all that we offer. If you have not visited in a while, come see all the changes as we continue to grow. If you are not a member, please consider joining. Sometimes the best part of coming to the library is visiting with friends with a common interest. We are open Monday through Saturday 10:00 AM to Noon. If you want to get more involved in the library or become a member, please email me at pjflaherty58@gmail.com I will get your information to the proper people. Lastly don't forget to check out our monthly programs. They will always be listed here in the Toozeday Nooze. |
Below are a few pictures from the open house and Bob's presentation. |

Prior to the open house on Saturday Bob Hohertz gave a PowerPoint presentation on Minnesota Revenues. He showed examples of items that many of us had never seen or even were aware of their existence. You could tell by all the questions that there was a lot of interest from the group on Minnesota Revenues. Bob has a very extensive collection of this material and his knowledge on these is likely unsurpassed by any of us. I meant to ask him for some scans to include in the Nooze. I have a very small collection of Minnesota Revenues and instead of a cover this week I am including a few scans of those. Bob showed examples of all of these types plus so much more. |
