Toozeday Nooze

Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 554 - 02/04/2025

This Saturday will be a workday at the library.
The program for February is on Fakes and Forgeries by Bruce Johnson. Bruce will have examples for you to examine. He will also go into detail on identifying stamps and will inform you on what books to consult. Bruce is a long-time stamp dealer and has many years of experience identifying stamps and forgeries for dealers and auction houses. I have seen this presentation and found it fascinating. It will be on February 22nd at 11:00 AM
This week's cover has me questioning the story I was told. I have not been able to confirm everything in my research. This is a postal card with a county cancel. Back when postmasters had to supply their own canceling devices some chose to list the county name. Some even chose to list themselves as the postmaster in the cancel. This was also done when there were multiple towns/cities with the same or similar names in the same state. Earlier examples from smaller post office often had manuscript cancels. What makes this one interesting is that I have seen this type of cancel with the postmaster's name at the top. These types of cancels came in many shapes and sizes. While there were lots of unique ones, there were designs like this one that were a common format amongst county/postmaster cancels. The story with this one is the post office demanded that the postmaster's name be removed as the postmaster was a woman and she listed her full name. While it was not unusual to have a female postmaster in the 19th century, the ones that listed their name in the cancel usually had used just an initial for the first name. I know this was a common practice amongst female entrepreneurs in the 19th century as they feared men would not do business with a woman. When I checked to see who was the postmaster of Oaksville, New York on July 9, 1887 when this was mailed it was in fact a woman, Electa A. Seaton. If the story I was told is correct that would have normally be listed as E. A. Seaton. What further intrigues me is that Oaksville, New York is not listed as a city/town that ever had a county or postmaster cancel. The book I use is The Catalog of U.S. County and Postmaster Postmarks by Kennneth L. Gilman, which is the respected reference book on the subject. The other possibility is that this is a weak/uneven strike of the cancel and the name at the top did not show up. The top of the oval is complete, but I suppose it's possible that the name was not set correctly in the slug. The person I bought this from is standing by his story. When I asked him how he researched it he informed me that he was told the same story when he acquired the postal card. In any case I found it to be an interesting story and if anyone has anyway of confirming or proving this to be fiction, I would love to hear from them.
