| We have five Saturdays this month, and the red box program has been going so well that we need help refilling the red boxes. Please join us on the two workdays this month to identify stamps and refill the red boxes on the 8th and again on the 29th. |
| At last month's meeting of the Twin City Philatelic Club, I told the story of a seller on Ebay that had several covers listed at $1,000.00 each, and the exact same covers in separate listings for $10.00. My curiosity had to see what was going on and at first glance even $10.00 was a lot for most of these. I did not know if this was a new technique by this seller to draw people in or some sort of mistake. It was not an inexperienced seller. One cover caught my eye as it was cancelled on February 29th in either 1884 or 1888. I have to do a little more investigation to determine the year. What helps is the blue cancel and it was sent from "The Lake House" in Sleepy Eye. This is listed as a discontinued post office as the name was changed to Sleepeye, (one word) in 1895. It changed back to Sleepy Eye in in 1905. |
| None of his other listings got any bids at either the $10.00 amount or the $1,000.00 and I was the only bidder on this. If this was a technique to draw bidders in, I would say it failed, however he did get a lot of views. After I received the cover, I asked the seller to explain. He claimed he left out a decimal point on the initial listings and he did not know how to change the price, so he just created duplicate listings at the $10.00 price as soon as he noticed. Call me a sceptic as I am not convinced this was the case. The seller has sold 1000's of stamps and covers on Ebay and editing your listing is not complicated as long as it is not the final day of the auction. At least it used to be back when I sold on Ebay. |
