| We have five Saturdays this month, and the red box program has been going so well that we need help refilling the red boxes. Please join us on the two workdays this month to identify stamps and refill the red boxes on the 8th and again on the 29th. |
| My cover this week is a tattered cover that many would pass on. It was cancelled in Princeton, Minnesota and sent to St. Paul, or maybe it isn't. The stamp is #25 and like the rest of the cover it is in rough shape. Someone noted January 10, 1857, in pencil on the back, which is unlikely accurate as the post office in Princeton opened September 14, 1861. It also should have been identified as Minnesota Territory in both the cancel and in the recipients address if it was sent in 1857. I think someone was hopeful that it was a territorial cover, but Princeton did not have a post office in territorial times. It was likely mailed in 1862 or from another state. There were several Princeton's throughout the country during this time period. Finally, there is the issue of #25 cancelled in 1862. Stamps issued prior to 1861 were demonitized in 1861 due to the civil war. I need to do a little more investigation to solve this mystery. I have done a search of the city Princeton postal history without specifying the state. I have not found another one matching this cancel. |
