| A lot of postal history deals with tragedy. This week's cover is a "crash" cover. Following is a brief description. |
| On March 2nd, 1951, Mid Continent Airlines Douglas DC3 N19928, during the approach to the airport at Sioux City, Iowa, in a heavy blizzard, lost altitude, crashed and burst into flames. The pilot, Captain James Graham and First Officer Philip K. Toller were killed. There were fourteen further fatalities among the crew and passengers. There were nine survivors of the crash. Mail was carried on this flight and 449 letters were salvaged and either returned to sender or forwarded, as in this case, under penalty cover together with a mimeographed explanatory note. The first picture is of the salvaged cover. The second is of the mimeographed note. The third is the official post office penalty envelope that these items were forwarded in.
