Toozeday Nooze

Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 579 - 07/29/2025

We will not have a board meeting this month as our annual meeting was two weeks ago at EXPO.
There will not be a program in August. We will resume monthly programs in September. One has already been planned. We are looking for presenters moving forward. Please contact me at pjflaherty58@gmail.com if interested.
My covers this month are from Farmer Village, New York. They are the type that have the county identified in the postmark. The postmasters in a lot of small towns or post offices classified as fourth-class post offices, had to provide their own canceling devices in the 19th century. Postmarks with county and sometimes postmasters names exist as early as 1810, but the widest use of them was from 1870 to 1890. In that time period a wide variety of fancy cancels such as cork cancels, hand cancels, manuscript cancels, a wide variety of machine cancels and cancels by canceling devices made by private companies came about. These "County Cancels" from Farmer Village are two examples where a private company that sold postal supplies to the fourth class post offices made the device for the postmaster of Farmer Village. Most of the fourth class post offices were in very small towns and the postmaster often received less than $50.00 a year for providing the service. Farmer Village had a post office from 1865 to 1892. In 1892 the name changed to Farmer. In 1904 the name changed to Interlaken. Mail sent from Farmer Village from 1865 to 1880 received a hand written manuscript cancel. In 1880 the postmaster purchased the device that had "Farmer Village" in the cancel, (the first example). This device was used until 1884. In 1886 he switched to the device with "FARMER VILLAGE" in the cancel, (the second example). All of these were hand canceling devices and they were often changed when they became worn or damaged. I was unable to find out what happened in 1885, but if the original device was damaged or lost he likely went back to manuscript cancels until he could purchase a new canceller. The canceller purchased in 1886 was used until 1888 when the post office provided them with a canceling device. The town shortened its name to Farmer in 1892. There was a change in policy for all post offices in the United States in early 1890, and the use of private devices was prohibited ending the period of time for all the diversity of cancel types that many of us love. Still some post offices continued using private devices and you can find examples up to 1900. You can find county names in some postmarks today, but they are not from private devices and are usually for a special service such as registered mail.
Our library has a great book on this subject, "Catalog of U.S. County and Postmaster Postmarks" if you would like to learn more about these. It is a Doane-Thompson book edited by Kenneth L. Gilman
To sign up for the Toozday Nooze go to our website at NORPS.org, there you will find a link for the Toozday Nooze and on the event page where you can sign up to receive the Nooze every week and keep up on events and programs at the library as well as happenings with the local stamp clubs and shows. I have been told this does not work with some phones but should be accessible from your computer. You do not need to be a member of the library to receive this, but I encourage you to do so. We are run and organized 100% by volunteers and your donations keep the doors open and the lights on.
Finally, and I hope this is allowed, I have started a YouTube site for collecting postal history. I hope to do one for the library soon when I get a bit more polished. This is 20 minutes long and it is my personal journey as to why I collect postal history and how I got started. I plan to do this a couple times a month and get much more in detail on specific topics. I hope to get some of you in front of the camera as well. I welcome feedback and yes I do know there is a lot of room for improvement and I am also aware I say, "Umm" a lot in this. ( I may use a shock collar next time and let my wife shock me each time I say Umm). I mainly wanted to learn the software and learn how to add images, titles, music and all the stuff that goes into one of these. So go ahead and like it, share it, comment on it and if anyone objects to my providing a link here I will remove it from the Nooze and will only show library related videos in the future. I have spent a lifetime on the other end of the camera as a hobby, and I am not comfortable on this side of the lens. (You may notice part of my camera collection in the background. My stamp room is way too messy to film there). I do not profit from this. In fact, it costs me money to produce. I figured anything that promotes stamp collecting and philately is fair game. I did tell some of our board members about it and there were no objections.
