This Saturday will be a workday at the library. |

I know several of our members went to GASS, (The Great American Stamp Show) this last weekend. I am looking forward to their stories. I only had one visitor to the library on Wednesday and none of the regulars. I assume at least some of them where on their way to Chicago. |

There will not be a program in August. We will resume monthly programs in September. One has already been planned. We are looking for presenters moving forward. Please contact me at pjflaherty58@gmail.com if interested. |

Bill from Golden Valley Stamps contacted me and asked for his monthly auctions to be included in The Nooze. I don't know why we have not done this before, but we will be going forward. If you have not looked at his auctions before, please do so. He has 2800 lots every month with material for any level of collecting. Golden Valley Stamps has been a great friend to the library, and we are happy to include them here. They are also a great source for supplies. Follow the link listed in the calendar of events below. |

Both the German Philatelic Society and the Scandinavian Collectors Club have chosen to not have meetings this month. They will have a joint meeting in September at the Danish Center. More details on that to come next month. |

Every year at this time I post covers and postcards for the Minnesota State Fair. After doing this for over 11 years I don't remember which ones I have shown before. Instead of repeating myself, I decided to show a couple covers from Hamline, Minnesota. The State Fair is held in what was once called the Hamline District. They had a post office from September 9, 1880, up through September 15, 1891. The post office was located in what is now part of the Hamline University Campus. Here are two very early covers sent from that post office. The first has a manuscript cancel of October 7, 1880. This was less than a month after the post office opened and when I bought this, I was told it is the earliest known cover recorded from the Hamline Post Office. The first postmaster for the Hamline Post Office was Mr. E.B. Higgins. Like many of the smaller 19th century post offices he was required to provide his own cancelling device. The following year he did purchase his own cancelling device as shown in the second cover dated April 11, 1881. He included his name at the bottom of the cancel. This is a very scarce postmaster cancel and is not included in the book of County and Postmaster Postmarks. I was told by a contributor to that book that there are likely less than five known to exist. When I told him that I had five he said, "Well, I guess five are known to exist." There is likely more. There are so many things in people's collections that collectors save for different reasons. Someone that saves Three Cent Green Large Banknotes could have some of these and they may even view it as common as they are only concerned with the stamp itself and not the cancellation. I received most of my Hamline material from another one of our members a few years ago after I purchased his exhibit on The Hamline District. I wanted it for my Minnesota State Fair collection which includes ephemera, memorabilia, postcards, philatelic covers and postal history. |

To sign up for the Toozday Nooze go to our website at NORPS.org, there you will find a link for the Toozday Nooze and on the event page where you can sign up to receive the Nooze every week and keep up on events and programs at the library as well as happenings with the local stamp clubs and shows. I have been told this does not work with some phones but should be accessible from your computer. You do not need to be a member of the library to receive this, but I encourage you to do so. We are run and organized 100% by volunteers and your donations keep the doors open and the lights on. |

I am working on my next video, and I promise a lot less of me and more on the covers themselves. The subject will be Fridley Postal History. The video will be shorter. I'm learning and I appreciate and listen to your comments. |
