Toozeday Nooze

Toozeday Nooze
EDITION 585 - 09/09/2025

This Saturday will be a workday at the library. We continue to re-stock our Red Boxes at the library. Most recently we did an extensive addition to Costa Rica and Poland. We continue to restock a lot of the common stamps in our red boxes. We also have bulk stamps by country that are not in 102 cards but are separated by country. You are welcome to pick through these envelopes of stamps. Good way to start a new country or look for those rare finds. There are also topical books with many stamps. Many of the stamps are 25 cent catalog variety, which is 5 cents per stamp donation to the library. (All stamps are 20% of catalog)
The program for September will be on September 27th. The topic is "Appreciating Cultural History: Integrating Paper Ephemera into a Stamp Collection", by Dr. Gene Young. Gene will give away, for free, a wide selection of ephemera, including 130-year-old maps, brochures, travel guides, and lots of old postcards. The talk will be geared toward new collectors and experienced collectors looking for new worlds to explore. I have attended many of Gene's presentations over the years and the way he incorporates ephemera and misc. into his philatelic programs is always entertaining along with fascinating stories. You will be entertained and I guarantee you will learn something.
The SCC and GPS will have a joint meeting this month on September 11th at 7:00 PM at the Danish American Center. Members from both clubs attended GASS last month and they will share their stories from the event.
My cover this month is an airmail cover that went from Minneapolis on December 5, 1935, to Southern Rhodesia where it was received on Christmas Day, December 25, 1935. Transpacific Airmail started less than two weeks prior to this being mailed, however this went the other direction and the sender paid for airmail service in the U.S. and then again once it arrived by ship in England. I assume it boarded a ship in New York but does not have any markings for this. The Transatlantic Airmail service did not start for another four years. The envelope is a Kodak mailer that has Kodak crossed out by the sender. Your guess is as good as mine as to if this was used for film or pictures or another use.
To sign up for the Toozday Nooze go to our website at NORPS.org, there you will find a link for the Toozday Nooze and on the event page where you can sign up to receive the Nooze every week and keep up on events and programs at the library as well as happenings with the local stamp clubs and shows. I have been told this does not work with some phones but should be accessible from your computer. You do not need to be a member of the library to receive this, but I encourage you to do so. We are run and organized 100% by volunteers and your donations keep the doors open and the lights on.
My next video is up. It is on Fridley Postal History.
